Klaus Mäkelä has established a strong international presence through his instant musical connection with orchestras around the world. Mäkelä is Chief Conductor and Artistic Advisor Designate of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and will assume the position in August 2020. He is also Principal Guest Conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Artist in Association with Tapiola Sinfonietta, and Artistic Director of the Turku Music Festival.

In the 2020/21 season, Mäkelä’s plans include his first appearances with Gewandhaus and Boston Symphony orchestras, Concertgebouworkest, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, and SWR Symphonieorchester, and returns to Orchestre de Paris, Gothenburg Symphony, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Helsinki Philharmonic orchestras. Mäkelä also continues his tenures with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Tapiola Sinfonietta where he will complete a Beethoven Cycle. 

This seasons’ concert programmes include masterworks by Mahler, Sibelius, Messiaen, Mozart, Ravel, Mendelssohn, Bruckner and Tchaikovsky. Mäkelä also conducts premieres by Unsuk Chin, Sauli Zinovjev and Mette Henriette, and recently written works by Anna Thorvaldsdottir, Kaija Saariaho, Brett Dean and Jimmy López.

Highlights from the 2019/20 season include appearances with the Cleveland Orchestra, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Bamberger Symphoniker, Frankfurt Radio, Swedish Radio, Finnish Radio, Gothenburg Symphony, and Helsinki Philharmonic orchestras, The Hallé, Scottish Chamber, City of Birmingham Symphony orchestras, and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.
